Teacher Guidelines for the 2012-13 Season Shows

No matter the production, remember that, for the enjoyment of all of our patrons, CENTERSTAGE cannot admit children under age 5 unless a show is specifically advertised for all ages.

The Raisin Cycle playing in rotating repertory

Clybourne Park
By Bruce Norris
Directed by Derrick Sanders

Appropriate for ages 13 and older

The Pulitzer Prize-winning drama taking America by storm. Picking up where Lorraine Hansberry left off in her landmark Raisin in the Sun, The New York Times called the riotous Clybourne Park a “darkly humorous… dissection of race, gentrification and real estate.” Serious discussions of racial stereotypes and death, plus strong language make Clybourne Park best enjoyed by mature middle school and high school students.

Beneatha’s Place
World Premiere
By Kwame Kwei-Armah
Directed by Derrick Sanders

Appropriate for ages 13 and older

For his first drama set in America, Artistic Director Kwame Kwei-Armah offers his own response to Hansberry and Raisin in the Sun, continuing the conversation initiated in Clybourne Park. In line with its inspiration, serious discussion of race and society, and some mild language, make Beneatha’s Place most appropriate for mature middle school and high school students.

Student Matinees

These 10:30 am performances for school groups have introduced over 80,000 Maryland students to live theater since their inception in 1994. Student Matinee performances are available for each of the Classic Series productions, and are not edited or adapted for young audiences; students get the whole performance, uncut. Tickets for these special matinees are just $15.

There are no more Student Matinees currently scheduled for the 2012-13 Season. There will be no student matinees for Clybourne Park and Beneatha's Place.

Enhance the Student Matinee Experience

  • Tours Arrive early to take a guided tour of CENTERSTAGE.
  • In-Class Visits CENTERSTAGE's Community Programs & Education staff are available to visit every school planning to attend a Student Matinee—from Baltimore City all the way to the most distant Maryland county. During these hour-long visits, staff and cast members prepare the students with an overview of the production, discuss the themes of the play, and engage the students and teachers in activities that help bring to life the wider social context of what they'll see. These visits bring our productions to three-dimensional life right in the classroom.
  • Post-Show Talkbacks Following the show, actors field questions from students in a discussion led by members of the CENTERSTAGE Community Programs & Education Department.
To schedule a tour please call 410.986.4233. To schedule an in-class visit please contact Rosiland Cauthen at 410.986.4051 or email rcauthen@centerstage.org.
