Dear Center Stage Family,

It is with warm greetings and great enthusiasm that I present to you the 2016/17 Season. It is a season of magic. Of transformation. Of coming home. It is also a shorter season as renovations on our Calvert Street home continue into the early fall. I sincerely hope that you join us for what is sure to be a memorable moment in Center Stage history.

This season, we’re building a world-class theater and bringing plays from across the world to you. We begin in 18th-century France with the scandalous Les Liaisons Dangereuses, a smart and sexy story that has captivated and shocked audiences for 200 years. Then, for our 2017 grand opening, we move to ancient China with the stunning fable-turned-theatrical-wonder, The White Snake—the first play in our renovated Head Theater. Then, we dash forward to 20th-century America with Twisted Melodies, a dynamic play with music, about musical legend Donny Hathaway. And we end with a world-premiere adaptation—and Center Stage commission—of Toni Morrison’s Jazz, an ambitious project close to my heart.

As the Artistic Director of the State Theater of Maryland, it is my aim and responsibility to open the theater to all who may hear our call. I hope the plays we’ve chosen will affirm Center Stage in the hearts and minds of our audience and beyond. Whether you came to several shows in the 2015/16 season or haven't been to us in several years, we welcome you with open arms.

Join us in your new home and experience a season of transformation.

Warmly,

Kwame Kwei-Armah, Artistic Director

A SPECTACULAR VISION IN A BRAND NEW THEATER
Mystery and magic intertwine in this fantastical fairy tale brought to life in grand spectacle in the newly renovated Head Theater. Originating from the ancient Chinese fable, The White Snake tells the story of animal spirits White Snake and Green Snake, who take human form as a beautiful woman and her sly servant. White Snake soon falls passionately in love with a poor fisherman, but their relationship is reviled by a conservative monk and tragedy lurks behind their newfound happiness. Complemented by storytelling techniques traditional and new, The White Snake will be a can’t-miss event of the 2016/17 Season for the entire family.

A MUSICAL HOMAGE TO A SOULFUL LEGEND
This powerful one-man show is based on the real life of '70s soul singer and composer Donny Hathaway, the creator of “The Closer I Get to You” and “Where is the Love?” and perhaps best known for his duets with Roberta Flack. Twisted Melodies is an immersive and crushing play about the brilliant musician’s compelling inner struggle. Torn between the muses that inspire him and the mental illness that torments him, Hathaway evaluates the choices in his life in a gripping performance by Kelvin Roston.

A WORLD PREMIERE
In Morrison’s exhilarating novel, Joe and Violet move from the Virginia countryside to Harlem at the turn of the century, young and in love. Twenty years later, Joe’s interactions with a young woman set off a series of violent events and unforgivable acts. Peeling back layers and alternating perspectives expose ultimately sympathetic characters, who—like the growing New York neighborhood and the winding woods of their youth—reveal their own rhythms.
