This was definitely one of my favorite performances of those that I have seen over the years at Centerstage. the storyline was moving, the writing was adept, and the acting beautiful. Rating - 5 | Apr 15 2010 1:02PM
Beautifully written, directed and acted. I have been a season ticket holder for decades and this is one of the best performances I've seen at Center Stage. Thank you for bringing Mr. Kwei-Armah's jarring and lovely story to life. Rating - 5 | Mar 7 2010 10:24AM
Multi-year season ticket holder at CS - best ever production. All 3 actors were superb. Many years ago, while watching Mr. Brooks play Robert Parker’s “Hawk,” I learned of his serious acting credentials. I went to the show tonight wanting to see the actor, Avery Brooks, who used to be Hawk. Instead I was transformed as this incredible actor became Alfred, aging father to all of us. One of the best performances I have seen in 30+ years of theater. Congratulations, Mr. Brooks. When Gretchen Hall stood for final bows, with tears still in her eyes, the power of the “actor” was evident. Perhaps the “end of the run factor” strengthened her performance, but she made her character live. Pascale Armand, likewise, made the second generation immigrant so real. Coupled with her other life style issues, her Gemma was the child to many parents in the audience. The acting made this play. Rating - 5 | Mar 7 2010 12:05AM
Dr. Brooks has never disappointed! His comanding presence on the stage is always a pleasure. They play was written with a perfect balance of humor and warmth. Kwame, you did it again! Rating - 5 | Mar 3 2010 11:37AM

One of the best I have seen at Center Stage! This is a great year. Rating - 5 | Mar 2 2010 12:59PM
This is amazing story and the actors bring it to life beautifully. The profanity used is in line with the story and is far from excessive. This was my first visit to Centerstage...what a way to begin!! I will surely return if future productions are half as powerful as I found this one. Rating - 5 | Mar 1 2010 1:08PM
My husband and I enjoyed this play. It was powerful in the way it dealt with immigration issues and prejudices. The ending is poignant and made tears come to my eyes. My only criticism is the offensive adult language and that is why I did not rate play a 5. I thought the 3 actors portrayal of their characters was so outstanding that the play did not need so much adult language. Rating - 4 | Feb 27 2010 5:20PM

Angelo decided to come with me to the show and we both loved it. It was great - The performance was very well done - I really appreciated how they handled all of the issues of race, immigration, and terminal illness. - Nicole W. Rating - 0 | Feb 25 2010 12:32PM

Dear all you amazing audience members who have written in: I write to you from snowy Hartford, CT -- where I'm just now reading your responses. Both Kwame & I want to thank you for your powerful & varied responses to this play -- and for your continuing commitment to Centerstage, who, under Irene's incredible leadership, constantly challenges you to watch & participate in provocative new stories with each production. It was a total pleasure to work-on, and you have something truly special there in Baltimore. Tell all your friends to come out & see this profoundly striking new play. All my best, Jeremy Cohen (Director, LET THERE BE LOVE). Rating - 0 | Feb 23 2010 9:09AM

We saw "Let There Be Love" yesterday. It's such a wonderful, powerful play. I connected with all 3 actors and have great admiration for the playwright. He is such a talented young man, I look forward to seeing his work yet to be written. The last scene moved me to tears - absolutely beautiful. Center Stage has never disappointed us. Thanks again. My friends and I saw this play on Sunday afternoon. We have been season ticket holders at Center Stage for many years, and I have to say this is one of the most amazing shows I have ever seen at this theater or any other. The play itself is gripping, and the performances could not have been better. I whole-heartedly recommend this show, but take the warnings about language and subject matter seriously. My wife and I have now been attending Center Stage for approximately 20 years and attended the Friday, 2/19 performance. We are in agreement that this is one of the most extraordinary productions we have ever seen at Center Stage on multiple fronts. The script addresses multiple themes, many of which are challenging in nature. But at the same time, the plot moves along effortlessly. Kudos to both the playwright and director on this front. The acting is outstanding. Each of the three performers completely inhabit their roles; each character is brought to life in seemingly effortless fashion - which only proves how good each actor really is at their craft. Even the set itself seemed to play a major role. It conveyed a real sense of place, a place where real people lived. It also looked just affluent enough to make it appear to be something Alfred had to work hard to achieve. In conclusion, with this production, the Theatre has now raised the bar on itself. I saw the show last Saturday. The performances were wonderful and I'm grateful I decided to attend. I'm just sorry I was unable to participate in the discussion with playwright Kwame Kwei-Armah. The Alfred character reminded me of some of my older relatives and their outlook of our changing world. Continued success! We were told the running time was 2:45. Rating - 0 | Feb 19 2010 10:00PM
just under 2 hours, including the 15-minute intermission. Rating - 0 | Feb 18 2010 10:03PM

Just watched the final dress of this show last night! AMAZING! Reminds you to not waste time living in the past or worrying about the future but to love the present and everyone in it! Bring your tissues. Life changing and life affirming . . . .Kwame Kwei-Armah is the worlds next brilliant August Wilson! Rating - 5 | Feb 10 2010 2:34PM
Will the actors speak in British accent? also, is it possible to get a more detailed summary of the play (or, the play itself?) English is not my wife's first language, and it would help if she knows the overall story in advance in order to fully enjoy the play performed on stage. Rating - 0 | Feb 9 2010 1:51AM
Re; "downer" - The play is brilliant and incredibly uplifting & moving. The production is gorgeous -- another gorgeous design, with an exquisite trio of performances, lead by stage & screen legend Avery Brooks. But yes, it is a complex & sometimes difficult subject matter, and, not unlike life, has moments of great joy...and of sadness. Re: "profanity" - that it does have. Not constantly...it's not David Mamet or anything, but yes, there are some moments where profanity is what is must be the dialogue between the characters...it's intentional and specific when used. The show, while still humerous, is quite serious and deals with serious issues, sometimes through humor. Rating - 0 | Feb 4 2010 3:55PM
The description mentions "heart-warming" "touching" and "humerous". My kids (young adults) are willing to come with me to shows, but don't want anything that's harrowing or could be described as a "downer". How's this play? Rating - 0 | Feb 4 2010 1:02PM

I would love to bring my husband to this performance but need to know if this production contains a lot of profanity. I attended "Elmina's Kitchen" with my son and husband. I found it hard to enjoy the play with all the profanity. Rating - 0 | Jan 9 2010 4:41PM
