Mirlande Jean-Gilles

Mother of two, award-winning artist and writer Mirlande Jean-Gilles captured our Season through her collage art for the 2019-20 season. Mirlande specializes in detail-capturing collages that vividly echo the heart and soul of a community.

In celebration of Mirlande’s heart-striking work, we held a reception in which she shared in captivating detail her time spent creating original pieces inspired by Baltimore Center Stage scripts. She shared a heartfelt story of sacrificing a full-time job to give her undivided attention to six imaginative collages, describing our last play of the season, Bakkhai, as her most challenging piece. Our collaboration with Mirlande signifies a stride to pull local artists into Baltimore Center Stage and provide them momentum to create new forms and expressions we can all learn from.

Mirlande is a “Bearden 100” in collaboration with The Romare Bearden Foundation and won the Maryland State Council for the Arts Individual Artist Award. Her collection of season art is installed in To Bean or Not to Bean, our lobby coffee bar. Visitors are invited to walk-in during operating hours for a coffee and the opportunity to appreciate these beautiful new works.
